ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C  Last weekend Northern State University Speech and Debate sent a small but mighty crew to New York City to compete in two styles of debate at the Off-Broadway Swing competition. This year marked the largest in the tournament¡¯s long history, as 22 schools from 16 states brought over 400 students total entries to the tournament.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C  This Saturday, Dec. 9, 117 students will graduate at Northern State University¡¯s winter commencement.

The public is welcome to attend and honor our new Wolves alumni. The commencement ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. It is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

Dr. Hannah Walters, Associate Professor in the School of Business and 2023 NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Awardee, will deliver the commencement address.

Northern State University Professor of History, Art Marmorstein, will give a talk on the rise of anti-Jewish sentiment in Nazi Germany at 7 p.m. Nov. 29, in Johnson Fine Arts Center, Room 181. The talk is highly relevant to the recent rise of anti-Jewish sentiment and violence in America and around the world.

Marmorstein will present ¡°It Couldn¡¯t Happen Here: The Rise of Anti-Jewish Sentiment in Nazi Germany,¡± which will discuss how an advanced, educated, highly literate and cultured people could descend into a regime define by anti-Jewish hate.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C  The Northern State University Department of Music has awarded scholarships from the Loren E. Lomis Music Scholarship fund covering the 2023-24 academic year for the following students: Ashlee Kaup, Hoven; Ava Pickard, Sioux Falls; Cassie Webb, Aberdeen; and Madelyn Westby, Aberdeen. Pursuant to the Last Will and Testament of Loren E. Lomis, these funds are to be used by the Northern State University Foundation for scholarships for those students who show promise and dedication to the fine arts of music.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Home games are about to get a bit tastier, with matching maroon and gold brews to choose from, thanks to the partnership with One Legged Pheasant.

Alpha Lager, which was released last year, has been a hit. The lager was specifically crafted to be a light, easy-to-drink beer and it has been selling out, even with increased orders. On average, 10 cases are ordered for home games. Each case has 24 16-oz cans. For Homecoming, 16 cases were¡­

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Five finalists will have five minutes to sell their ideas, shark tank style, at Northern¡¯s annual Idea Pitch competition on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Gallery. The audience will weigh in on who walks away with cash prizes. The event is free and open to the public to attend. This year¡¯s finalists include students from the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Fine Arts and School of Business.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C A guest musical duo from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will perform an upcoming concert at Northern State University.

Yu-Mei Huang, violin, and Fritz Gechter, piano, will present a recital of music by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Mozart on Monday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Krikac Auditorium.
